Alois Brunner is born in Austria. As Adolf Eichmann's most trusted assistant — Eichmann will refer to him as his "best man" — Brunner will be responsible for sending nearly 150,000 Jews to the gas chambers in Nazi death camps.

He organizes mass deportations from Solvakia and Vichy France, even serving as commandant of the Drancy internment camp outside Paris for a time.

He escapes prosecution after the war, possibly with CIA help according to some, and he is believed to flee to Syria in 1954 where he will be employed as a government advisor. He is described in 2003 as "the world's highest-ranking Nazi fugitive believed still alive" and it is thought that letter bombs from Mossad take an eye (1961) and fingers from one hand (1980).
