In Mecca, Saudi Arabia, 244 Muslim worshippers are trampled to death and another 251 are injured during the ritual of the stoning of the devil at the Hajj. The ritual stoning of the devil is in fact one of the most dangerous parts of the entire Hajj and the time when the most problems occur. This is not the first time pilgrims are trampled to death during the ritual.

One problem is that crowds increase every year, especially as long-distance travel become cheaper, easier, and more accessible to more people. Second, many Muslims believe that the stoning of the devil ritual needs to be performed immediate after noon prayers even though scholars say that it can be done at any time during the day. Third, it's the last day of the pilgrimage when people are probably the most tired. Finally, many pilgrims ignore the instructions of those responsible for public safety and organizing the pilgrimage, making a difficult situation dangerous.
