German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer is born in Breslau, Germany (now Poland). As a German theologian and minister, Dietrich Bonhoeffer will become active in the religious protest against Nazi policies.

Bonhoeffer becomes a leading figure in the Confessing Church, the only organized Christian Church that opposes Hitler and the Nazis. Bonhoeffer focuses first on peaceful and diplomatic effrots to stop Hitler, but after finding that such methods get nowhere he joins a plot lead by military officers to assassinate Hitler - a plot which fails.

Bonhoeffer will be arrested on conspiracy charges and spends two years in prison before being executed by hanging - just three weeks before his prison is liberated by the Allies. Bonhoeffer's captors kill him in full knowledge that they would lose the war soon but they want to make sure that the end of the war would not see the release and restoration of Bonhoeffer.
