Pope Pelagius II dies. During his reign, the Lombards threatened to take control of the papal lands. Because the Byzantine emperor was not very helpful, Pelagius II asked for and received help from the Christian Franks. The Franks invaded Italy but left again after being bribed by the Lombards.

Pelagius also came into conflict with Eastern churches when the bishop of Constantinople, Patriarch John IV, began using the title "ecumenical patriarch" in 588.

According to Pelagius, this represented an encroachment upon papal authority and papal supremacy. As a consequence, Pope Pelagius II refused to endorse the decrees of the synod at which the title was first used.
