A decree issued by Martin Bormann prohibits clergy and theology students from joining the Nazi Party. Martin Bormann is the most anti-clerical of all Nazi leaders.

Some of Bornmann's anticlericalism stems from animus against Christianity itself but much is also driven by his conviction that the social, cultural, and political power of churches is incompatible with the totalitarian goals of Nazism.

Even churches that agree and work with the Nazis are potential rivals which need to be suppressed.
