Pope Gregory XIV is born Niccolò Sfondrati. As pope, Gregory XIV will have a short and unsuccessful reign. Weak and invalid right from the start, he will die from a large gallstone - reportedly 70 grams. Gregory's reign will be marred by his appointment of his own nephew as cardinal-secretary.

Gregory XIV will abandon the policy of his predecessors in maintaining a balance between Spain and France, preferring instead to favor Spain - probably because he was elected due to the influence of Spanish cardinals.

Gregory will also intervene heavily for the Catholics in the French Wars of Religion. He will excommunicate Henry of Navarre and repeats the decision of his predecessor, Pope Sixtus V, that a heretic (Protestant) like Henry is ineligible for the Catholic throne of France.
