Cotton Mather dies. A Puritan minister, Cotton Mather's prolific writing made him one of the most influential religious leaders in the North American colonies.

Unfortunately that influence included encouraging belief in witches and his 1688 book Remarkable Providences helped start of the Salem Witch Trials. In later years Cotton Mather was completely unrepentant about what happened in Salem, even to the point of arguing in defense of using "spectral evidence" at trials of witches.
