Catholic bishops in France announce that it is acceptable in certain narrow circumstances to use condoms in order to stop the transmission of AIDs. This represents a departure from the official Vatican position that the use of condoms is never permissible under any circumstances.

According to French bishops, use of condoms may be licit only "in the case of people for whom sexual activity is already part of their personal lives, and where such activity would present serious risk". This is basically limited to a married couple where one is already infected by HIV and doesn't want to pass it along to their spouse.
