Iraq and Jordan proclaim their intention to create a political union as the Arab Federation (Al Itihad Al Arabi) under the leadership of King Faisal II of Iraq. This new political entity would be a pro-western rival to the recently announced United Arab Republic being created from Syria and Egypt.

Whereas the UAR would transform Syria and Egypt into provinces a new, single, centralized state governed by President Nasser, the Arab Federation would still allow for local government over the separate Iraqi and Jordanian regions.
