The Polish government places Bishop Kazimierz Kowalski under house arrest, accusing him of ordering Catholic priests not to support state authorities. Kowalski is also accused of removing from office a priest who supported the government's takeover of the Catholic charity "Caritas."

Bishop Kazimierz Kowalski will be released the next month after he releases a public apology:

"I desire to prove by my future behavior my correct attitude towards the state authorities by coordinating my activities, which have hitherto conflicted with the regulations of the authorities, with the laws in force."
