Marinus van der Lubbe arrives in Berlin. In a few days he will apparently set fire to the Reichstag, giving Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party the excuse they needed to crack down even further and expand their dictatorial powers.

The actual guilt of Marinus van der Lubbe is a matter of some debate. Some believe that he is guilty and that the Nazis were simply able to take advantage of the situation; others argue that the entire event is staged with Marinus van der Lubbe serving as a fall guy.

The truth seems to be a combination: he intended to set fire to the Reichstag but was too inept to succeed but Hermann Goering was doing the same thing at the same time, though more successfully. Thus van der Lubbe is guilty of trying to burn down the Reichstag as well as a convenient scapegoat for the Nazis who actually succeeded.
