Timeline of History

Joseph Goebbels appears before a carefully selected audience at the Berlin Sportpalast (Berlin Sport Palace). He delivers what has become known as the Sportpalast Speech or the Total War Speech.

By this point in time the war had turned decisively against Nazi Germany — so much so, in fact, that Goebbels is forced to admit in his speech that Germany was in danger. Field Marshal Paulus and the German 6th Army had surrendered to to the Soviets at Stalingrad on February 2nd, a devastating blow the morale.

The point of the speech is, however, to exhort the population to commit itself totally to victory. It is one of Joseph Goebbels most famous speeches and also widely regarded as one of his best.
