Rev. James Callan of Rochester, NY, is excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church after he refuses to halt practices such as giving women prominent roles during mass, blessing same-sex unions, and inviting Protestants to take part during religious services.

According to diocesan chancellor Rev. Kevin McKenna, James Callan effectively excommunicated himself earlier in the month when he started renting his own church space and holding religious services without sanction from the Catholic hierarchy. Today's suspension is simply an official move intended to reflect that status.

James Callan responds by saying:

"I was kind of hoping they wouldn't do this because it looks bad for them. But as far as I'm concerned, this doesn't affect me, and I don't think it affects most of the other people either."
