Pope Pius V excommunicates Queen Elizabeth I of England because of her severe persecution of Roman Catholics in England. This is the last time any pope issues such a judgment against a reigning monarch.

Fighting opposition to the Catholic Church is an important goal for Pope Pius V. He greatly expands the power and effectiveness of the Inquisition and increases the use of the Index of Forbidden Books. As a result, heresy (or at least public heresy) virtually disappeared from Italy.
