William Randolph Hearst publishes an editorial in his many newspapers across America in which he calls for a "Union of Churches" to defend Christianity against "Atheism and Paganism."

According to Hearst,

"To maintain religious liberty in democratic nations, and to re-establish respect for religion and tolerance for all religious worship throughout the world is so great an objective that all churches should unite in the effort to accomplish it.

In union of the churches of God against atheism and paganism there is strength to succeed."

It's interesting that Hearst is only interested in a union of churches, i.e. a Christian union. Although he cites persecution of Jews as part of the reason for this, he doesn't actually advocate that Christians work with Jews for the sake of religious liberty, never mind other religions.
