Sylvester III is elected pope. After a Roman mob drove Pope Benedict IX out of Rome, they chose Sylvester in his place. In a month, Pope Sylvester III will himself in turn driven out of Rome by Benedict's supporters.

Eventually, he will be regarded as an antipope rather than as a legitimate pope.

Benedict IX only remains pope until May, at which time he sells the office to his godfather, John Gratian, so he himself could get married. John Gratian takes the name Gregory VI. Sylvester, at this time back in his old bishopric of Sabina, will recognize Gregory VI as the legitimate pope.
