Walter Plywacki, a native of Poland, finally becomes a citizen today after having to fight in the courts for the right to do so despite being an atheist. Currently a student at Oregon State University, he was refused citizenship in Hawaii when he told the court that he was an atheist and could not conscientiously repeat the traditional oath "So help me God."

Walter Plywacki appealed the court's decision to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals based in San Francisco and this court overturned the Hawaiian ruling.
