St. Basil of Caesarea, bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), dies after spending the past 17 years doing ecclesiastical work in his city. Basil is best known for having argued on behalf of the Nicene position regarding the nature of Jesus and against the Arian position.

Basil of Caesarea will be honored as a saint in both the western and eastern Christian churches.
