Sir James Frazer, the noted British anthropologist and author, is born in Glasgow, Scotland. Generally considered the father of modern anthropology, Frazer's most famous work will be The Golden Bough (1890).

In this work Frazer will explore the similarities among magical and religious beliefs in cultures all around the world. Frazer will argue that human beliefs proceed through three distinct stages: primitive magic, then its replacement religion, then finally its replacement science.
