The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is officially incorporated. The largest Lutheran denomination in the United States, it is created by a merger of American Lutheran Church (ALC), the Lutheran Church in America (LCA), and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (AELC).

These three churches had themselves been created out of pervious mergers of smaller Lutheran churches which had all split apart at various times due to doctrinal disputes.
