After being captured by the English, Joan of Arc is turned over the Bishop Pierre Cauchon. Joan of Arc has been leading French forces a war against the English and Pierre Cauchon is a French bishop, but Cauchon has allied himself with the English.

So when Joan of Arc is turned in to Pierre Cauchon on suspicion of heresy, his motivations for dealing with her are more political rather than religious. Discrediting her as a heretic will, by implication, undermine the claim of Charles VII on the French throne. Pierre Cauchon lacks jurisdiction to put her on trial and will deny her legal counsel.
