Archbishop Gröber of Freiburg: Sterile People Cannot Enter Valid Marriage

Archbishop Conrad Gröber of Freiburg reaffirms that Church's teaching that marriage is for procreation and, therefore, that sterile people cannot enter into valid marriages.

According to Archbishop Gröber:

The Church has great sympathy for such persons, but she cannot change her basic position, based on the natural law."

For a while, this is also applied to those Germans who are forcibly sterilized by the German government, but that will be reversed - perhaps because there was a growing number of Catholics who fall into this category and who might become alienated from the Church entirely otherwise.

What's important to note is that Gröber's statement is completely accurate: given the Catholic Church's position on the nature of marriage, no other conclusion is possible. This is, then, an example of the Catholic Church quickly altering a position due to popular pressure rather than any changes in their understanding of natural law.
