Berengar of Tours dies on the island of St. Cosme. Head of the school at the Chartres cathedral school, Berengar of Tours was a French theologian whose contributions were more about the example he set rather than in specific ideas.

Berengar of Tours believed that only rational understandings of revelation should be accepted and, moreover, that church leaders did not have the authority to compel anyone's assent to irrational understandings of revelation.

This brought him into direct conflict with the pope and other church leaders when he thought they were demanding acceptance of irrational conclusions.
