Innocent III is elected pope. Born Lotario dei Conti di Segni, Pope Innocent III will call the Fourth Crusade which is supposed to provide support for the Byzantine Empire at Constantinople against attacking Turks. In the end, though, the Fourth Crusade sacks Constantinople and loots its treasures.
