For the first time, full diplomatic relations are established between the United States and the Vatican. Prior to this, the two only had consular-level relations and for 72 years no formal relations at all. Attempts have been made to challenge the constitutionality of having an ambassador to a church organization, but those challenges have proven unsuccessful.
