German Protestant and pacifist Martin Niemöller is born (Friedrich Gustav Emil Martin Niemöller) in Lippstadt, Germany. Niemöller will be politically conservative and initially supports the policies of Adolf Hitler. Soon, though, he will leave the Lutheran Church and helps found the Confessional Church in opposition to attempts by the Nazi Party to assert control over Protestant churches.

Martin Niemöller's opposition to Hitler will thus be based not in opposition to Nazi Anti-Semitism or militarism, but out of desire to preserve the independence and privileges of Christian churches. It is only later that his opposition to the Nazis develops into a broader pacifism and anti-Nazi position.
