The Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, with the approval of Pope John Paul II, publishes a 19-page document entitled "Doctrinal Note on Some Questions Regarding the Participation of Catholics in Political Life."

According to this document,

"A well-formed Christian conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program or an individual law which contradicts the fundamental contents of faith and morals."

Thus, Catholic politicians are told not to vote in ways which contradict what Catholic religious leaders inform them about Catholic faith and morals.
