In order to prevent any prisoners being liberated by the Allies, the SS command gives orders that all prisoners at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp who can't be evacuated must be executed by this date.

It's impossible for the guards to do this, though, and 7,500 prisoners are left behind to be found by the advancing Red Army on January 27th.
