According to the legends, Agnes becomes a martyr when she refuses to marry the son of a prefect because she has pledged her virginity to Jesus. As a virgin, Agnes cannot be executed for this affront, so she is raped first and then executed, but her chastity is miraculously preserved.

The wood that is supposed to burn her will not ignite, so a soldier beheads Agnes. Agnes will become the patron saint of virgins, chastity, young women, and betrothed couples.
