Baron d'Holbach dies in Paris, France. Paul-Henri Thiry, Baron d'Holbach, was a central figure in the French Enlightenment who became well known both for his atheism and his extensive critiques of religion.

Baron d'Holbach contributed around 400 articles on many different subjects to the Encyclopédie, but it's his criticism of religion which continues to draw the most attention. At the time Baron d'Holbach had to write anonymously as even other philosophers in France objected to the stark materialism and atheism of his views.
