Pope Sixtus V issues the papal bull Immensa Aeterni Dei, reforming the Roman Curia. Most significantly it establishes 15 permanent congregations, analogous to courts, ministries, or departments in secular governments.

One of these is the Congregation of the Inquisition, known today as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
