An ecumenical council meeting in Basel asserts its superior authority of the papacy by insisting that Pope Eugene IV appear before them to discuss reforms for the church and the curia. The pope will refuse and convenes a rival council that he will be able to control.

As a consequence, the Council of Basel formally suspends Pope Eugene IV; the next year they will depose him as a heretic and elect an antipope.
