For the first time a pope visits Cuba and this is the first time Fidel Castro has been willing to allow Pope John Paul II into the nation. On this date, at the end of his visit, the pope demands that all the political prisoners in Cuba be freed. At the same time, he condemns the U.S. embargo for the economic suffering it causes.
