Journalist, author, and critic of religion Henry Louis Mencken dies in Baltimore at the age of 75. Mencken became famous for his satirical reporting on the Scopes Monkey Trial - in fact, he was the one to start calling it the 'Monkey' trial.

Henry Louis Mencken wrote extensively and very critically on features of American culture which he regarded as serious problems: anti-intellectualism, bigotry, Christian fundamentalism, creationism, organized religion, the existence of God, alternative medicine, etc.
