Philip, the Count of Flanders, dies during the siege of Acre, probably from plague. Flemish soldiers and nobles have played important roles in the Third Crusade since the first reports of the fall of Jerusalem were heard in Europe, and the Count had been one of the first to take up the Cross and agree to participate in the Crusade.
