The Old Catholic movement unanimously elects their first bishop, Dr. Joseph Hubert Reinkens, in a ceremony in the chapel of Cologne's city hall.

He will be consecrated the next month by the Jansenist bishop of Deventer, Hermann Heykamp. Bishop Reinkens will be recognized by major European governments, giving the Old Catholic Church in Germany official status.

Along with Ignaz von Döllinger, Johann Friedrich von Schulte and Franz Heinrich Reusch, Dr. Bishop Reinkens will write the Nürnberger Erklärung, which serves as the foundation for Germany's Old Catholic Church.
