Emperor Constans II

Timeline of History

History Topics

Eastern Roman Emperor Constans II dies at the age of 37, reportedly the victim of an assassination.

It was under his rule that the Byzantine Empire completely withdrew from Egypt, allowing the Muslims under Caliph Uthman to take it over and begin assaulting various islands in the Mediterranean.

He himself was almost killed in the Battle of the Masts against a Muslim naval fleet, one of many defeats the Byzantines suffered under his rule.

It was also under Constans II that the conflict between orthodox Christianity and the Monothelite heresy became more intense, largely because he attempted to appease both sides and forbade any public discussions about the nature of Jesus.
