Pope Nicholas IV is born Girolamo Masci in Lisciano. The first Franciscan to ever be pope, Nicholas IV will at first refuse the office and has to be convinced to accept the papacy.

His political policies will not be very popular, especially his focus on both crusading and hunting heretics.

To ensure the security of the papacy, he will forge political alliances which create new enemies. For example, he provides considerable support to the Colonnas family in Rome, and this creates dissent among much of the Roman populace.

The one action of Pope Nicholas IV which does not create widespread dissatisfaction will probably be the establishment of the Catholic Church in China.
