Nicolas Flamel is born in France. A scrivener and manuscript seller, Nicolas Flamel will acquire a significant posthumous reputation as an alchemist because of his reported work on the philosopher's stone — a legendary substance with the ability to transform base metals like lead into gold.

For most of the history of European alchemy, the discovery or development of the philosopher's stone was the primary goal of practitioners' work. Over time, it came to represent not simply the creation of massive wealth, but also ideals of perfection, bliss, and enlightenment.
