Girolamo Savonarola is born in Ferrara, Italy. As a Dominican friar, Girolamo Savonarola will be most famous — or infamous — for his regular bonfires of vanities: the burning of books, mirrors, paintings, cosmetics, and other items which either appeal to people's vanity or tempt people to sin.

The world will lose many pieces of Florentine Renaissance art to Savonarola's bonfires, including paintings by Sandro Botticelli which he is believed to have thrown into the flames personally.

Girolamo Savonarola becomes more a preacher than a theologian and his fiery sermons, combining attacks on moral corruption with apocalyptic visions of the future, make him popular with the people but unpopular with political and religious leaders.

Girolamo Savonarola will spare no one from his attacks, not even Pope Alexander VI, who excommunicates him and has him executed as a heretic.
