Selim I (Yavuz Sultân Selim Khan, Hâdim-ül Haramain-ish Sharifain), Ottoman sultan, dies in Corlu at the age of 55. Selim became the first Ottoman caliph and is best remembered for having tripled the size of the Ottoman empire, mostly in Asia and Africa.

Under Sultan Selim I, the Ottoman conquered the entire Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and took control over the greater part of the Arab world in the Middle East. On his death, the Ottoman Empire encompasses around 1 billion acres of land.
