Ann Lee dies in Watervliet, New York, at the age of 48. She has long been very frail, mostly as a consequence of the violence she and her Shaker followers have endured at the hands of mainstream Christians in America.

Generally known as "Mother Ann" by her followers, Ann Lee's teachings created a community where celibacy and simplicity are regarded as the highest ideals.

Her sect is technically named the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Coming, but it has come to be known among outsiders as the "Shakers." They have a form of ritual dancing, known as "shaking," which develops from presumed spirit-possession.
