Philosopher Miguel de Unamuno is born in Bilbao, Spain. An important intellectual force in interwar Spain, in his book Del Sentimiento Trágico de la Vida en los hombres y en los pueblos (The Tragic Sense of Life, 1913) he will examine the dichotomy between the irrational hope for immortality and the rational expectation of death.

Unamuno will conclude that, because faith can never outweigh reason, the hope for immortality can never entirely overcome the expectation of death. This would seem to make human life pointless, but Unamuno argued that one should strive to live an authentic, moral life.
