Friedrich Nietzsche returns to Basel to finish his book Human, All Too Human: A Book for Free Spirits (Menschliches, Allzumenschliches: Ein Buch für freie Geister).

Nietzsche had taken a leave of absence from his job at the University of Basel in 1876 because of health problems and moved to Sorrento to spend time with his friend Paul Rée.

The first part of Human, All Too Human will be published in 1878. The second part, Assorted Opinions and Maxims (Vermischte Meinungen und Sprüche), will be published in 1879. The third part, The Wanderer and his Shadow (Der Wanderer und sein Schatten), appears in 1880.
