Hanns Ludin, Richard Scheringer, and Hans Friedrich, three army officers, go on trial for "Preparing to Commit High Treason" because of their activities on behalf of the Nazi Party.

If Adolf Hitler supports them, he will be going against his promises that his movement seeks a legal acquisition of power; if he denies them, he risks alienating his many radical followers.

So Hitler attempts to chart a middle course and succeeds in not angering too many on either side.
