Still recovering from a nervous breakdown, Foursquare Gospel founder Aimee Semple McPherson marries actor and musician David Hutton. This is her second marriage; they will divorce only four years later.

This marriage creates a huge controversy in McPherson's church because it teaches that remarriage is not permitted so long as one's former spouse is still alive — and McPherson's first husband is still very much alive. What's more, this teaching is something McPherson herself has promoted.

The marriage between Aimee Semple McPherson and David Hutton gets off to a rocky start because just two days later, he is sued by ex-girlfriend Hazel St. Pierre for "breach of promise." She alleges that he already proposed to her; he says he's never met her. Hutton will settle out of court by paying St. Pierre $5,000.
