Gestapo Supresses Independent Confessional Synod Created by Bishop Otto Zanker

Reichbishop Ludwig Müller

In Silesia, Germany, an independent Confessional Synod created by Bishop Otto Zanker is suppressed by the Gestapo. This is, by all accounts, an attempt by the Nazi government to eliminate independent Protestant organizations and reinforce the rule of the Nazi's favored Reichbishop.

This isn't the first or only Confessional Synod created in opposition to the government-backed church administration of Reichbishop Ludwig Müller. None of the others, though, have been suppressed in this manner.

A month ago, Ludwig Müller sent out a secret appeal for spies in Silesian parishes:

"Highly confidential. We have been informed that you are especially interested in church life and support the work of the Reich Bishop and the Reich church government.

We therefore request you to assume the office of confidential agent of the Reich church administration in your parish.

You must inform us whether you are a member of the parish council, whether you are a member of the National Socialist party, or whether you belong to some subordinate party organization."
