B. F. Skinner's groundbreaking book The Behavior of Organisms is first published. Of the 800 copies in the first printing, only 548 will be sold by 1946. It establishes the foundations for a discipline that will be called Behavior Analysis.

In this, his first book, B. F. Skinner explores the science of behavior and how studying the behavior of an organism can produce real, reliable data about that organism.

Skinner classifies all behavior either as respondent or operant behavior. Respondent behavior is defined as something caused by an observable stimuli; operant behavior is defined as occurring in the absence of any observable stimuli (for that behavior).
