Mohammad Reza Pahlavi becomes Shah of Persia, replacing his father Reza Pahlavi.

Last month the Allies invaded the Imperial State of Iran because, although the nation is technically neutral in World War II, Reza Pahlavi is friendly towards the Axis.

The strategic importance of Iran is difficult to overstate: not only does it control large oil fields that are critical to the war effort, especially for Germany with few sources of oil, but it is a critical route for Britain and the United States to keep the Soviet Union supplied.
