Joseph Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, joins a regular army unit that is assigned to a camp where the borders of Austria, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia met.

He will later talk about how his unit comes under the command of former members of the Austrian Legion whom he describes as "fanatical ideologues who tyrannized us without respite."
